Key takeaways

  • Use crawlable anchor links whose text explains the destination.
  • Connect parent, child, sibling, policy, and next-task pages only where they help the reader.
  • Audit orphan pages, broken links, redirects, and overlinked templates as the catalog changes.
In this guide
  1. Link for the next customer task
  2. Build the core store paths
  3. Use link text that explains the destination
  4. Connect guides on the same topic
  5. Check for broken and missing links

A link should take customers to something useful and give search engines a way to find the page. Add links for that purpose, rather than to reach a target number.

From a product, useful next tasks may be its category, size guide, delivery policy, compatible product, or checkout. From a guide, they may be a pillar, practical next step, relevant policy, or product feature. Link only when the destination helps.

Build the core store paths

Keep primary categories in navigation when appropriate. Use breadcrumbs for hierarchy, category links to products, product links to genuine alternatives, and footer links for policies and business information. Important pages should not depend only on a sitemap.

Write anchor text that identifies the destination in the sentence. Avoid repeated “click here,” stuffed exact-match anchors, hidden links, and JavaScript-only controls without a crawlable href.

Connect guides on the same topic

Choose a main guide for each topic and link it to closely related guides. Give those guides a link back to the main one. Avoid linking articles just because they share a tag. Choose related guides by how useful they are for the reader’s next step.

Regularly find orphan URLs, broken links, redirect chains, links to unavailable products, and templates with hundreds of low-value anchors. When URLs move, update important internal links rather than relying forever on redirects. Apply the category architecture guide.
